Started in 1989, Desert Sands Assisted Living and the Sunrise Garden Villas cater to residents who have a mental health diagnosis who need some help with daily living activities. Desert Sands Assisted Living is a 42-bed Type A Large assisted living facility licensed by the State of Texas and Sunrise Garden Villas is the largest boarding home in San Antonio and is permitted and regulated by COSA. Both Desert Sands Assisted Living and Sunrise Garden Villas offer 3 meals a day, transportation to and from doctor’s appointments, housekeeping once a week, laundry once a week, activities, and medication monitoring.
We are a 65-unit garden apartment complex located just outside Loop 410 off San Pedro Ave near the airport in San Antonio. North Star Mall is a 20 minute walk away or a bus ride from the bus stop a block away. Residents are also taken to HEB and/or Walmart once a week.

Desert Sands Assisted Living at the Sunrise Garden Villas has over 25 well-trained, compassionate staff that are available 24/7. In fact, three of our staff live on at the facility: our Clinical Director, Kitchen Supervisor and Maintenance Supervisor. This helps ensure we can take care of most problems that might arise quickly and safely. Our staff is dedicated to the well-being of our residents, some of which have been with us for over 20 years.
Caring for people who have many times fallen through the cracks in the support safety net can present its challenges. That’s why we have several innovative solutions to problems of the mental health resident. Assistance with benefit applications, income-based rent, and our Bonus Bucks programs are 3 examples.

I have been a nurse with Desert Sands Assisted Living for over 8 years. I find my position to be incredibly rewarding, as I am able to assist our residents with their daily hurdles, and empowering them to enjoy their lives to the fullest. I look forward to meeting and working with all our new residents, and getting them acclimated to our friendly and courteous assisted living environment.
