Every Day


MEALS: We offer 3 meals a day plus a snack. Meals are prepared by our Certified Kitchen Manager from menus created by a Registered Dietician. Some of the residents’ favorite dishes include Roasted Chicken with green beans and tater tot casserole.
TRANSPORTATION: Desert Sands Assisted Living at Sunrise Garden Villas provides transportation for doctor’s appointments and a weekly trip to HEB or Walmart. Our experienced, citation-free driver will drop off residents for their doctor’s appointments and return when called to pick them up. She provides assistance to those who need it to enter and exit the van. We can also arrange to pick new residents and their possessions when they are ready to move in.

HOUSEKEEPING: Each room has a day assigned for it to be cleaned. Our trained housekeeping staff a 23-point check list that ensures each room is thoroughly cleaned. Our housekeeping staff strives to help maintain a sanitary, cheerful environment.
LAUNDRY: On their assigned day each resident can bring two laundry baskets of dirty clothing. Our staff will wash and fold their laundry and it is available for pick up the next day. Additional loads and/or pick-up and drop-off services are available for a small fee.


Activities
Do we have activities! To start with we have New Dawn Adult Day Care one block away. We have Karaoke, pool tournaments, Cooking classes, Bingo, card games of all sorts, arts and crafts, movies and a computer lab. If residents don’t already have an email account we show them how to set up a gmail account and then encourage them to check it regularly by using our Bonus Bucks program. Attendance at New Dawn is mandatory for residents of our Boarding Home unless waived by the administration.

Back at Desert Sands Assisted Living at Sunrise Garden Villas we have free cable TV, free wi-fi and a beautiful 30,000-gallon swimming pool. Pool parties with a cook-out almost every Friday when weather-appropriate. We have monthly parties for both holidays and birthdays. Once again, we encourage participation with our Bonus Bucks program.


Resident Assistance Programs
BENEFITS MAXIMIZATION: Many of our residents don’t realize that they may qualify for additional federal, state, or local benefits or they may just be unable to go through the process by themselves to get them. Our Resident Assistance Maximization Specialist assists residents applying for food stamps, free cell phone, Star Plus Waiver and Aid & Attendance (for our veterans) to name a few. This is an incredibly valuable resource for our residents. We do the follow-up ourselves in most cases to make sure it gets done.
TRUST FUND: We act as payee for about 2/3 of our residents. We disburse funds every Friday to help residents make their limited funds stretch the whole month. With the resident’s or their representative’s permission we pay co-pays, phone bills, etc. on the resident’s behalf. There is no charge for this service and our books are regularly audited by both Texas Health and Human Services Department and by Social Security.

TRUSTEE PROGRAM: Some residents just need to keep busy doing something they feel is productive. For residents who meet certain requirements we can offer jobs such as emptying trash, washing dishes or yard work. In order to qualify the resident must be obeying the rules of the facility and be medication-compliant. They must also get a doctor’s release for the activity they will be performing.
BONUS BUCKS PROGRAM: Most of our residents have very limited income. To help them make ends meet we have our Bonus Bucks Program. We give residents Bonus Bucks when they do something that we encourage such as attending resident meetings, attending Day Care, keeping their room clean, etc. They can then redeem them at our Company Store for toiletries, snacks and more.
